Informal PhD gathering

The PhD Journey: a participative question and answer; discussion and problem-solving session

Conveners:

Dr. Zarina M. Charlesworth

Glion Institute of Higher Education, Switzerland

Dr. Carol Evans

University of London, Institute of Education, UK

General aim

This is an informal gathering that aims to bring doctoral candidates together who are currently working on a thesis in the field of learning styles and strategies. The gathering will open with an introduction to the pitfalls, crises and challenges faced by PhD students working in the field of style research. Following this, the tone will be directed by the participants themselves who will be asked to submit questions, and requests for discussion prior to the actual gathering.

By the end of this informal session the participants can expect to have:

·         had help in structuring and organising their thesis;

·         reviewed methodological concerns, including the use of various types of software for quantitative/qualitative research

·         discussed, if not answered, any questions that they themselves have put forward.

A bibliography of research and thesis-writing related literature will be provided.

Approach

This informal gathering will be organised around and in answer to the participant’s needs. Following a short introduction, the format will be a round-table discussion. The specific questions that will be treated will depend on what is requested within the themes set out in the attached form.

If you are interested in participating in this informal PhD gathering, we invite you to submit your questions and queries to the conveners one week before the conference at the latest (deadline: 16 June 2008). Please send your completed form to Zarina Charlesworth (charlesworth@glion.ch).
