ELSIN history

The European Learning Styles Information Network (ELSIN) is an association of academics, researchers, trainers and practitioners in the fields of education, psychology, business, computer science, information systems, management and other related fields who are interested in the theory and application of learning and cognitive styles and strategies of learning and thinking. One of ELSIN's greatest strengths is its interdisciplinarity, attracting people from a wide range of disciplines and professional contexts. ELSIN is also continuously seeking to broaden this base.

ELSIN came into existence thirteen years ago during the first conference at the University of Birmingham's School of Education. This conference was organised as a response to emerging interest in issues relating to individual differences in learning and cognition and their relationship with performance in educational and occupational contexts. Following from this first conference, ELSIN organises an annual three-day conference in June. The programme consists of invited keynote lectures, paper sessions, workshops, symposia, and informal social activities.

The aims of ELSIN are to:

  • further opportunity for research and development in learning and cognitive styles and strategies of learning and thinking
  • promote collaboration with practitioners in various contexts
  • enable the dissemination of information about learning and cognitive styles and strategies of learning and thinking
  • promote international collaboration in research and development
  • facilitate events that help to realise these aims
